Our previous study found that when injected\udwith Nociceptin/Orphanin FQ (N/OFQ) into the brain,\udmale Dark Agouti (DA) rats, which are resistant to metabolic\udsyndrome, have greater hyperphagia than male Wistar\udOttawa Karlsburg W(WOKW) animals, which are prone to\udthis disease. We attributed this difference to the fact that\udthese two strains have different cocaine-amphetamine\udregulated transcript peptide (Cart) gene sequences and\udexpression. In order to address this hypothesis, the present\udwork focused on sex differences and analyzed not only\udmale but also female N/OFQ-induced (0.25 and 0.5 nmol/\udrat) food intake in terms of their Cart and N/OFQ receptor\udgene expression in the hypothalamic area. In N/OFQ-naive\udWOKW females, cart gene expression is extremely elevated\udcompared to N/OFQ-naive WOKW males. When\udmale and female WOKW littermates are stimulated with\udN/OFQ, the food intake of females is significantly lower\udthan that of the males. Granted, the N/OFQ feeding\udbehavior experiments were not performed on the animals\udmeasured for Cart gene expression, but nonetheless, the\udresponses observed in littermates point to an interesting\udavenue for further inquiry.
